The college has a cherished past and secured for itself a place of pride in the area of medical education and patient care in the region. Over the years the school has appeared as a nursery of medical teachers and trained physicians who have fanned out in the country to work as key participants in private as well as public healthcare to meet the growing demands of the nation.
At the time of the partition of the country, the Medical College, Amritsar was only three years old. Dr. A.N. Goyal (1947-51) was the first principal of the college after independence. The College and its associated group of hospitals were allotted the serious responsibility of providing assistance and medical aid to the emigrants who arrived in the country in a state of sorrow.
