Nishaan Sahib, the twin flags that perennially fly outside the Akal Takht Sahib, represents the concept of Miri-Piri. It signifies that the duty of every Sikh is to balance his\ her spiritual obligations with temporal responsibilities. These flags are the memorial of Miri-Piri concept taught by the sixth Guru, Sri Guru Hargobind Ji. The two swords worn by Guru Hargobind Sahib represent the dual obligations of Miri and Piri. They further emphasize the dual concept of Degh-Tegh (the Kettle & the Sword) symbolizes each Sikh's duty to feed the poor and protect the weak.
