Guru Ka Langar (community kitchen) was started by the first Sikh Guru, Guru Nanak Dev Ji in 1500 AD at Kartarpur. It is a voluntarily run community kitchen to feed the people irrespective of their class, colour and religion. The idea behind this kitchen is to erase the religious discrimination among people. People are made to sit together on the floor and have their meals. The Golden Temple has a separate langar hall which serves langar and runs all day and night throughout the year. Many devotees come and serve in this langar hall. On a regular day 50,000-60,000 people eat langar at Golden Temple, and during some festival or on special day the number could soar up to 100,000. Meals are usually very simple vegetarian which contain Roti, Dal, Sabji and sometimes, sweet dish (Kheer) is also served.
