Amrit Sarovar is the holy pond on which the Golden Temple’s beauty has been reflecting from the centuries. Originally, it was a small lake in the middle of the forest, and many saints and sages used to take rest here to meditate and dip in the holy water. Both, Baba Buddha Sahib and Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji had visited here. With the blessings of Sri Guru Ram Das Ji, the excavation work of this sacred sarovar started, as Guru Ji considered it as the holiest sarovar that strengthens the worshiper and dissipates bad deeds of devotees. And for those who wish to take a dip in the sacred pool, the Temple provides a half hexagonal shelter and holy steps to Har ki Pauri. It is believed that bathing in the sarovar purifies one's karma and makes the body and soul free from diseases. Pilgrims carry bottles of the pool water home for friends and relatives.
It is believed that this sarovar had made Bibi Rajni’s husband free from leprosy and all those who took a dip in the holy sarovar can free themselves of any disease. It was earlier dependent on rainwater. But during the British period, it was connected to the Upper Bari Doab canal of the Ravi River to ensure a year-round water supply. And nowadays, a part of the water supply comes from tube wells installed in the Golden Temple complex
