Ramgarhia Bunga or Burj are the tower shaped three-storied watchtowers constructed with red stones, located in the Golden Temple premises. These towers were built in the late 18th-century by a great Sikh warrior and chief of the Ramgarhia misl Jassa Singh Ramgarhia. Around the watchtowers, he built a mud fortress and water well. To house the soldiers. Previously the complex was called ‘Ram Rauni’. These two Bungas were built to monitor the activities around the Golden Temple and to alert the Sikh soldiers regarding any surprise attack by the invaders and to protect the holy complex from desecration. The two minaret-style high towers are visible from the parikrama (circumambulation) walkway around the Harmandir Sahib Sarovar. During the 18th-century Maharaja Ranjeet Singh and many, Sikh missal chiefs and rich Sikh communitie leaders built over 70 such Bungas of different shapes and forms around the Golden, Temple, but only two have survived. It is important to mention here that after conquering Delhi by the Sikh misaldars brought a big sized stone slab of marble, originally part of Mughal throne to Amritsar. This marble slab is preserved in Ramgharia bhunga for visitors to see it.
