The Golden Temple is a place where angels themselves visit to receive the blessings of the Almighty God. The divine site is named as Harmandir Sahib that means “Temple/Residence of God”/Darbar Sahib-“the Divine Court”. It is the holiest and most visited pilgrimage site of Sikhs. This is the most revered and magnificent site from where the Sikhism began to spread the Revelations of all the ten Gurus throughout the World. The central grand building of Golden Temple is surrounded by the holy pool, called Amrit Sarovar, where the Sikh pilgrims take holy bath to free themselves of their evil deeds. The first unique compilation of Aadi Granth (Shri Guru Granth Sahib) was installed on August 16,1604 A.D., here at Golden Temple and the most senior Saint scholar and a devout Sikh Baba Buddha Ji was honored as the first Head Priest of Shri Harmandir Sahib Ji. The groundwork of Harmandir Sahib was commenced by Shri Guru Ram Das Ji. He started excavating Amrit Sarovar, the Sacred Pool in 1573 A.D. And the fifth Guru Shri Guru Arjan Dev Ji gave it a final touch with brick-lines in December, 1588 A.D. While sitting under the Ber-(Jujube) Tree, Baba Buddha Sahib Ji along with some other privileged devotes used to supervise the whole construction work of Golden Temple. Now this sacred place is known as Ber Baba Buddha Ji. To deliver the message of inter faith equality and brotherhood, on December 28, 1589 A.D, Guru Arjan dev Ji requested a famous Muslim Saint, Sai Mian Meer ji to lay the foundation stone of the this pious shrine. The distinct features at the Golden Temple signify humble living, as there is no discrimination of caste or religion. This is the reason it has four doors known as: – Door of Peace – Door of Livelihood – Door of Learning – Door of Grace. Open for all human beings. The Golden Temple was constantly attacked by invaders on its way to and back from Delhi. In the year 1762 and 1764 A.D., the Golden Temple site was completely destroyed and many Sikh devotees lost their lives. After this incident, the Sikh Misaldars with great courage and sacrifice once again rebuilt Sri Harmandir Sahib and later on Maharaja Ranjit Singh embellished it with 14 copper and pure gold. During British era, this sacred shrine came to be known as the Golden Temple. The Langar Pratha is the major pioneer service where all the pilgrims are served with free food. Here, at Golden Temple, there is a huge building called Guru Ram Das Langar Hall. It is a free community kitchen. In the dining hall, where three meals and tea are served with sublime humbleness and devotion.
