Shaheed Bunga Baba Deep Singh Ji Shrine is situated in the prikarma-(circumambulatory) of Sri Harmandir Sahib Amritsar. Baba Deep Singh Ji was the leader of the famous ‘Shaheedan Di Missel’ among the 12 missals. Baba Deep singh Ji was born on 20th January 1682 A.D. in the village of Pahuwind in Amritsar district. On the Vaisakhi of 1700 A.D, he was baptised into Sikhism by Guru Gobind Singh ji. He stayed back in Anandpur Sahib and learnt the skills of weaponry and horse riding.
Apart from that Baba Deep Singh Ji rendered great service of writing manuscripts of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and distributing them to the other parts of Punjab and other states. He was a great worrior who participated in all the major battles that took place in the 18th century. In the year 1757 when Baba Deep Singh got the news that Taimurshah & Jahan Khan have shown disrespect to Sri Darbar Sahib and have started filled the holy Sarovar (the Pond), Baba Ji who was 76 year old at that time carried 18 Ser-(1 Ser = 933.1 grams) heavy Khanda (two edged sharp sword) in his hand and took a pledge to free the Golden Temple from the invaders and started his journey towards Sri Harmandir Sahib. A fierce battle took place near Gohalvadh village in Amritsar.
Baba ji fought two fierce battles against Mughal force of 20,000. In the second clash with the Mughal forces, Baba Deep Singh was beheaded. There is a miraculous story connected with that. It is believed by tha Sikhs that to fulfill his pledge Baba Deep Singh held his head in his left palm and with his right hand he swayed the Khanda with such a force that the enemies started running. Fighting like this, Baba Ji reached Goldent Temple & offered his head at the Parikarma of Harmanidr Sahib. Today, all the pilgrims and devotees bow their head before the shrine of Great Sikh martyr Baba Deep Singh Ji.
