In the early 19th century, the fort was conquered by the Sandhwalia Jat ruler Ranjit Singh, who re-named it Gobindgarh Qila in check the name of 10th Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Gobind Singh. The major reason for the construction of this fort was the protection of Sri Harmandir Sahib and the city of Amritsar from the Mughal and Afghan invaders who used to follow Grand Trunk road while entering Punjab.
