The city of, Tarn Taran Sahib was established by the fifth Sikh Guru Arjan Dev Ji. Gurdwara Darbar Sahib situated in the city of Tarn Taran. This Gurdwara is known for the world’s largest Sarovar (Water Pond). The water in the pond is believed to possess medicinal qualities which can cure leprosy. Maharaja Ranjit Singh regularly visited Tarn Taran from 1802 onwards and reconstructed Darbar Sahib, Tarn Taran in 1836-37. He finished the work of Parikrama which was left incomplete during Misl period. He gold plated Darbar Sahib like Harmandir Sahib at Amritsar. Many artisans decorated the interior walls of Darbar sahib. Nau Nihal Singh, grandson of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, planned to build four towers around each corner of the Sarovar, but he could manage to construct only one before he died.
