Baoli is a term in Punjabi that refers to open well. People can find steps down to the surface of the water. Many such sacred wells were installed by the Sikh Gurus, and are still a feature in many historic Gurdwaras. The most famous Baoli Sahib is located at the site of Govindwal, founded by the third Sikh guru, Guru Amar Das Ji. This has 84 stairs denoting the Earth's 84 lakh species (sometimes written as 84, 00,000 or 8.4 million) life forms. One side of this staircase is for men and the other for women. Many devotees who visit Baoli Sahib recite the entire hymn of Japji Sahib on each step in the hope of being liberated from transmigration. This Baoli Sahib was established to help Sikhs from fetching water from a faraway source. The digging which began in 1556 was completed in 1559.
