Saragarhi Gurdwara is situated in between Town Hall, and the statue of Maharaja Ranjeet singh installed on the Heritage walk way. It was built in the memory of 21 non-commissioned Sikh officers and soldiers of the British Army whose names have been engraved on a marble stone fixed on the wall of the Gurdwara. These courageous soldiers showed their bravery by holding their ground on 12 September 1897 at the Fort Saragarhi against a massive onslaught of 10,000 Pathaans-(Iranian ethnic group). With a staggering ratio of 1 soldier to about 500 tribesmen, the brave soldiers continued fighting till their last breath. To commemorate their bravery, the memorial Gurdwara was erected at this place. In 1904, Sir Charles Pvez (Lt. Governor of Punjab) paid homage to the courage and bravery shown by 21 soldiers by opening this Gurdwara to the public. The Gurdwara Saragarhi can be visited on the heritage trail of Amritsar, near the Golden Temple. The British government awarded the hightest award to all the brave Sikh officers who scarified their lives. The battel of Saragarhi is known among the top 5 battels ever fought in history by the UNO.
