Gurdwara Mata Kaulan Ji or Gurdwara Kaulsar Sahib is a sacred shrine on the west-side of Gurdwara Baba Atal in Amritsar. At this sacred shrine, a Sarovar (pool) known as Kaulsar Sarovor, named after Mata Kaulan Ji exists. According to the Sikh praditior, Mata Ji was a Muslim girl called Bibi Kaulan. She was a highly spiritual woman, above religious divides. Though a Muslim girl, she was the follower of the 6th Guru Hargobind Ji. The story goes that her father, the Qazi considered her as infidel and therefore, he had pronounced a death sentence for Bibi Kaulan. She was brought discreetly to Amritsar.
Here, at Harmandir Sahib, she was allotted a special place near to Baba Atal Ji, where she spent her entire life and took part in religious duties. She took her last breath at Kartarpur. The Samadhi-(cenotaph) of Mata Kaulan Ji lies at the western end of the Kaulsar Gurdwara. Among Sikhs Gurdwara Mata Kaulan and Kaulsar Sarovar has special significance as Guru Hargobind Sahib, had directed the devotees to take a dip in the Sarovar Kaulsar for spiritual peace and tranquility.
