Gurdwara, Sri Chheharta Sahib, located 7 km west of Amritsar, is named after a well having six (chhe) Persian wheels (hart or harta). The well was sunk by Guru Arjan Dev Ji to meet the demands of water of the area. The well was very wide, and the water supply was abundant.
The well has now been covered, but its water is still pumped to feed the main Sarovar of the Gurdwara. The town has now become an industrial township. Chheharta falls within the revenue limits of Vadali Guru, a village in Amritsar where Guru Arjan Dev stayed during 1594-97.
On the fifth day of the lunar month, a congregation attracts large gatherings in Chheharta. The largest fair held on this day is in the month of Magh (January-February) which marks the popular Basant Panchami festival.
